3 Unexpected Signs that you Might be Struggling with Trauma
Many of us know the obvious signs when someone is struggling to cope…panic attacks, angry outbursts, total body shutdown…
But how about those more subtle signs? Things like:
-Being a Workaholic
Leaning into work to get things done is great & productive. But if work feels more like a refuge or the perfect distraction from whatever’s troubling you inside, this may be a sign of something amiss. We call this someone stuck in a trauma response of flight mode.
-You zone out a lot
Being lost in your own thoughts is fine if you are still aware of what’s happening around you. If you often lose track of time, where you are, who you’re with etc, these can be signs of disassociation. This is again a means of escape or a trauma response our brain forms when fleeing a situation is not an option. In this way, it’s also a flight trauma response.
You’re a people pleaser
You find it easier to give in to other’s needs, even when it’s detrimental to you. A big one here is not being able to uphold boundaries. Again, this can be a trauma response that’s been formed to protect yourself.
So what can you do about it? Research has proven that talking therapy done with a somatic treatment like Yoga is one of the most effective ways to understand and heal our bodies. Processing your emotions both verbally AND somatically gives your body & mind the healing tools it needs to process what’s coming up for you. Having a professional guide and hold that space for you also can be that one link that changes everything.
